On the origin of a student lifestyle
Michael Marshall, reporter
Paying extra to get vegetables with dinner, getting a tradesman in the future in and clean your shoes for you personally, not to mention your own private horse. Yes, it's student life,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Charles Darwin style.
Christ's College, Cambridge, where Darwin would be a student, has unearthed records from the bills he ran up while he was there. The debts are published today in the Complete Works of Charles Darwin Online.
His lifestyle was an expensive one, as we would expect of the son of a gentleman. Considering the fact that UK universities are keen to massively improve their tuition fees, Darwin's cosy student lifestyle seems very far.
Darwin was at Cambridge from 1828-1831, also it was clearly a formative experience for him, but we all know little about his time there.
Aside from the expected bills for rent and college food (he paid extra to obtain vegetables with his meals), the records include bills for an apothecary,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a barber, a bedmaker, a shoeblack, a porter, library books, a brazier, coal, a cook, a chimney sweep, a scullion, a grocer, a glazier,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a hatter, a smith,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a steward, a laundress, a tailor, private tuition, a linen draper, a woollen draper and a painter.
Quite simply, Darwin's lifestyle was one of comfort and privilege. He occupied one of the best (and priciest) suites within the college. From other sources, we all know he also kept a horse in Cambridge, though it is unclear where. John van Wyhe,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], director from the Complete Works project, adds that, "a friend made a joke coat of arms for Darwin which makes drinking and smoking Darwin's trademarks."
The final item one of many bills is among the most incongruous. In 1836, after the ,
Darwin returned to Cambridge and paid £12 for his MA. No, not a
second degree,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but a sort of automatic upgrade towards the original degree,
requiring no extra work.
For somebody like me, who went to Cambridge in early 21st century, taking a look at this info is much like
looking inside a distorting mirror.
Cambridge's reputation for
as being a playground for rich young men has become undeserved, though
contemporary students can still begin to see the faint echoes from it in some of
the customs and societies surrounding it (and also the no-work-required MAs are still available). But back in Darwin's time, it
actually was like a gentleman's club.
Modern Cambridge students have rather fewer servants at their beck and call: categories of students share a bedder, a misleading term (because they often don't make the beds) that really means "cleaner". Apologies to fans of Porterhouse Blue, however i can't report ever having encountered one who would be a voracious sexual predator in advanced middle age.
The list of servants and tradesmen maintaining Darwin's needs seems bizarre and anachronistic to us now, however the notion of university life because the exclusive preserve of the well-off is coming to haunt us.
It would appear that (so far at least) the development of fees hasn't deterred students from poorer families from signing up to university, but there is another question we should ask: whether the resulting debts will deter people from doing degrees that don't result in highly-paid jobs.
Darwin's immense body of work was only possible due to the money he inherited, which allowed him to reside the life of the gentleman scientist. If he had been lumbered with thousands of pounds of student debt, would we still have the foundation of Species?
Matthew failed to develop or publicise his ideas in any way,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], therefore he can't be believed to have advanced the thought of Natural Selection. History only sees him like a curiosity, but nothing more than that.
For Wells, his work was limited in scope and never recognized to Darwin at the time 'Origin' was published. Furthermore, Wells' limited observations apply simply to certain characteristics of humans (skin colour) to not all life on the planet. Worthy of a footnote though,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I believe (and that i like footnotes!).
Prof Wainwright, would I be right in thinking that you say you had been unable to get your paper published and therefore you put it on your blog and therefore are now submitting links for your blog paper on a number of different forums (I've come across a handful of your contributions). I admire your energy and determination, a superbly reasonable strategy, but I'd like to query your suggestion (made elsewhere) that the paper was rejected due to 'censorship'. There is no conspiracy of silence, Professor - a lot of us have had papers rejected.
If you state that Darwin came up with Theory of Natural Selection you are telling an easy falsehood(known as a lie outside academia!). Why don't you pay attention to Darwin and Wallace once they tell you this? As for Simon Hay's comment-I have been publishing in science for many 4 decades and know the "ins and outs" of paper rejection and acceptance (having had some 200 papers accepted ). Simon Hay must do a simple experiment -try and obtain something published which goes from the current, unscholarly glorification of Darwin-he will be in for a significant surprise, and,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], much like me, he will apt to be slandered as a "creationist"
The same individuals who were skeptical before are skeptical now. People across the world are losing their very nations,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], their lives and food supplies to the climate change caused in part through the greed of industrialized nations. And you cons continue to be too selfish and lazy to create changes in the face area of ample evidence! You seize on the couple statements in an e-mail as evidence you don't need to change your ways and turn a blind eye to folks suffering. This is a very real problem and you guys are sickness a strawman to be able to continue your self-centered, short-sighted materialistic lifestyle. No one lives else lives like Americans do, and thousands of people will soon be dying so that you can live much better than any medieval king. Have you no shame whatsoever? No a feeling of responsibility for that harm you cause to individuals who never did almost anything to you?
