FuelBand for sale in Canada,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
FuelBand, which hits Canadian Nike and Apple stores Wednesday, is a high-tech pedometer wristband that tracks movement and counts burned calories. It uses a video game-style point system to motivate users, rewarding them for being more active.
The band also lets users track their progress over time and share their accomplishments on social media through the Nike+ FuelBand App,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
It's a lot of sharing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], something Nike hopes will set it apart from its competitors. But while experts say the band does tap into some innovative ideas around motivation, it could be dangerous if taken too far.
"There's a delicate balance between the promotion of health and ensuring that we're not over-emphasizing weight as the primary component of health,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Michelle Dionne, psychology professor at Ryerson University.
Dionne said that since Nike's band tells people about every calorie burned, it could lead to body-image issues and an obsession with the numbers on the bracelet, especially if those numbers are being shared on social media.
"All in all, it could be motivational," but it might drive people to extremes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Dionne said.
The social media aspect was designed to encourage a "healthy competitiveness among users,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," 22-year-old NHL hockey player Steven Stamkos said at a pre-launch event last week.
"Whether you're just doing things around the house or going for a walk around the block,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it's going to self-motivate you," said the Tampa Bay Lightning centre,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], looking at the sleek black band.
"You're going to want to try to beat your score every day … It's going to get you more active and you'll have fun with it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]."
Ricky Engelberg, Nike's experience director for digital sport,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said the device was designed to use the video game mentality of wanting to earn points and trying to beat your friends as a motivational tactic.
Guy Faulkner,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a professor at the University of Toronto who specializes in the psychology of physical activity, said Nike is on to something by using video game psychology. Using points and reward systems has worked for companies such as Weight Watchers in the past, and could help people increase their activity level.
Rena Mendelson,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a nutrition professor at Ryerson University, says the band could act as a digital coach, giving users feedback with the numbers and in turn,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], motivation.
"Anything that motivates exercise is a good thing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it could be really useful for people that need the support," she says.
But she says that maintaining a healthy lifestyle and losing weight requires more than just exercise. She points out that the device does not take into account how many calories a person eats during a day,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
