Bewley to fill McEwen's shoes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Bewley, 24,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who is part of New Zealand's track cycling squad for the London 2012 Olympic Games, will reportedly be announced tomorrow,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], according to reports coming out from across the Tasman.
McEwen retired yesterday after the final stage in California,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], concluding a 17-year professional career that saw him capture 12 Tour de France stage victories,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], three maillot verts, and two Australian national road championships.
Bewley was known to the team to be his replacement, but could not announce his place in the Australian outfit until after McEwen's final ride because of strict UCI rules.
The spot in Orica-GreenEDGE will see the Rotorua native quit the track and focus on road racing after the Olympic Games,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Based in Spain for the past few years,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Bewley recently told his hometown newspaper The Daily Post: "I've had a pretty good run at the track but there comes a time when you have to think about your future.
"My future is on the road and I can see myself being based in Europe for the next 10 years."
Bewley,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who spent two years with RadioShack,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], took a bronze medal at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games in the team pursuit,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a result repeated at the recent Track Cycling World Championships in Melbourne.
"I'm excited to be part of an Australian team," said Bewley. "I'm not Australian of course,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but New Zealand and Australia are pretty united when it comes to sport unless we're competing against one another. Even then,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it's a friendly rivalry. I'm really happy to be part of a team from the Southern Hemisphere that's racing in Europe."
Bewley makes his debut with the team at Bayern Rundfahrt in Germany on May 23. He'll compete for New Zealand in the event at London 2012 as part of its 15-strong team,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the largest Olympic cycling contingent in the nation's history.
Bewley will be joined in the line-up by Jesse Sergent,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Marc Ryan,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Aaron Gate and Westley Gough.
His first race for Orica-GreenEDGE will be in Germany where he'll start the Bayer-Rundfahrt. He is the third Kiwi to join the team, alongside Julian Dean and Linda Villumsen
